India Takes steps to Increase the Women workers in Tech

The thing we learnt from Tech industry is to focus on numbers and look for solutions. The numbers of Indian Tech force tells that only around thirty percent of women in India work in Tech Fields. The ratio of male to female is 76 to 24 and expected to increase to 65 to 33 India can do still better. In United States female tech workforce is only 21 percent. The tech community in India is helping to increase the women workforce.

PayPal has launched a program to bring back woman who taken off minimum 2 years from their career. The company targeted women with tech background and five years experience in analytics and product development. Ten candidates would be taken on board to work in Chennai and Bangalore and they would be given training and internship. PayPal has. Forty Two percent of women employees globally.

Another organization that works towards increasing of women workforce is Headstart Network Foundation. This group of three Lakhs entrepreneurs claims that is the largest network in India. This organization hosts events on weekends especially for women. The founder of F5 escapes Malini Gowrishankar helps women in having off beat experience. She is also national lead of Women Entrepreneur – WE. WE initiative program happens once a month in different cities featuring a successful woman entrepreneur, a monitoring session or networking hour.

Sheroes is job portal for Educated Women Professionals. The site hosts forum where women can talk to mentors and other systems to start a business of own. There are many other initiatives too. “Girls in Tech” is run by NASSCOM with an initiative to increase women entrepreneurs. There are number of Taxi hailing Apps that run on woman’s safety. India launch first tech university three years ago.  While these things seem like getting better for women, there is an adverse roar in Chhattisgarh that says that the enthusiasm of women to work and improve has adversely affected the men. The unemployment of men has increased due to women. Bringing Tech woman workforce equal to men workforce is not an easy task and needs a lot more efforts.

This was an eye opener of how hard it is to maintain healthy life. healthifyMe started on  along with another co-founder Shachin Shenoy a person who handled different Google products for six years. HealthifyMe launched calorie counter app in 2012 seeing the western nutrition app did not include any information of Indian food and was of less use for Indians users. In 2014 the app was made available to iOS and to android app and had 40,000 users. But healthifyMe wanted more. There was a big turnaround when the team stopped building new features and focused on bringing users by adding health and wellness coach, yoga instructors, fitness trainer, and nutritionists who come for an additional fee.  The second step up the ladder was moving to Google’s Material Design to get healthifyMe to get notices by searchengines and then worked on the design and Play store featured the startup in 2015 which increased the sales by twenty five to thirty percent. The number of users increased to 250,000. healthifyMe partnered with 3 hospitals in delhi and Bangalore. Apart from this the team started going around the cities and talk to users about what they felt about the App. All these is a lesson to everyone who want to startup and make it big.

The smart phone launched by Ringing Bells Private Limited opened to orders on 18 February 2016 and the product is supposed to be delivered by month of June.

Now about the Phone – The look of the phone is like dwarf form of iPhone9, Has 3G dual SIM and  4inch HD IPS touch screen, 1.3 GHz quad core processor, 8GB internal memory, 1GB RAM, 1450mAH battery and 3.2MP camera but the using one can see the difference. The phone made in Taiwan had slow responding operating system, the camera is there for show – It is almost useless. Though freedom 251 would have the stamp of made in India, 80 percent of the product is manufactured in Taiwan. According to phone dealers, even 250 Rupees would be a waste if the phone does not work properly.

But how will Ringing Bells Private Ltd give it for Rupees 251? The company’s owners are from are agro-business men who were in trading agro products for past three decades. Their experience shows in the 1 page advertisement in news papers. The orders would be taken on their website and will stop when the orders reach two lakhs to two lakhs and fifty thousand. The manufacturing of the phone would actually cost more but the company expects weaving off of duty by government which would to cut the cost by Twenty to Thirty percent. There is also expected cost reduction of Thirty Five Percent by selling through their own internet channel. Lastly a waiver of 13.8 percent is expected by upcoming goods and service tax waiver through startup schemes and make-in-India schemes. The rest would be covered by economics of sales.

Leveraging HTML5, Gamezop allows users to play new games each week on a single app; completely eradicates installation friction

Smartphone gaming platform Gamezop has closed $350K (Rs. 2.3 crores) in seed funding led by entertainment marketers Kwan. US-based Powerhouse Ventures, an existing investor in Gamezop, also participated. Others in the round include TracxnLabs, Germany-based AECAL, and prolific angels Anand Chandrasekaran, Phanindra Sama, Vinay Menon, and Arjun Batra.

The Delhi-based company aggregates short and addictive games from around the world, which can be played on a single app and removes the friction of constantly installing and uninstalling individual games. Although Android only at this point, all of the hundreds of games featured on the Gamezop app are device- and OS-agnostic and can be shared as weblinks for play on any smartphone, tablet, PC, or Smart TV. The company is building a product for global markets and is extending features to HTML5 game developers to get them on par with their native counterparts.

MD of Kwan, Anirban Das Blah, says that his company has been looking for innovative gaming models for a while. “Kwan is in the business of helping consumers find content and products that engage and entertain them. However, it amazed us that India didn’t have a compelling gaming product. Gamezop we felt had the potential to be a game changer for the gaming industry in India. It wasn’t enough to work with them; we wanted and needed to be a part of their journey in a more meaningful way. That’s why we have invested in Gamezop!”

Yashash Agarwal

                Founder

20-year old CEO, Yashash Agarwal, who was invited for the Thiel Summit in Silicon Valley last year, has been in the gaming business for two years now. “Content-light platform plays have been most scalable in the digital consumption space. Popular forms of digital entertainment, such as music or videos, already have platforms that serve as one-stop destinations. However, in gaming one only hears of individual titles. We are building a platform to make gaming reach the inflection point that the others have already witnessed,” he said.

The numbers back Agarwal’s hypothesis: at 135% CAGR, India is one of the world’s fastest growing mobile gaming markets and is projected to grow to $600M by 2016. However, it can still be called ‘untapped’ by global standards. “The Chinese market at 15X our size is massive. Super casual HTML5 gaming within messenger apps has really picked up there. We are already working on exciting distribution alliances and will build an open platform to piggyback on existing networks.”

Team Gamezop

                              Team Gamezop

Sri Peddu, MD of Powerhouse Ventures, has appreciated the careful selection of the target audience. “India isn’t a mature gaming market and most are still non-gamers who haven’t used gaming consoles. Gamezop with its snackable games is a crisp offering and targets those who would use their smartphones as their first gaming device. It’s a segment that is poised to grow and the founders have the requisite product expertise.”

The startup secured angel funding as a part of the latest batch of tech accelerator GSF. Founder of GSF, Rajesh Sawhney, has backed the startup in personal capacity. “With gaming being an underserved category in this part of the world, these guys are after the right problem. Removing the download-deletion fatigue, providing offline access to online games, and bespoke game recommendations to cut clutter are huge value additions.”

The team plans to invest the funds in technology, distribution alliances, and talent. Gamezop is seven members strong at this point and has Yashash’s elder brother, Gaurav Agarwal, who worked at Bain & Company earlier, as co-founder. The two have been selected to represent India this April at the International Business Model Competition at Redmond, co-hosted by Microsoft, Harvard Business School, and Stanford Graduate School of Business. In May, they will travel to Silicon Valley for the global finals of the TiE International Startup Competition.

Upon being asked if being one of the youngest in the country to raise institutional funding was a challenge, Yashash praised the evolving Indian startup ecosystem that no longer demands several years of experience. “Our focus has been to build a robust product that addresses the genuine problems for users and indie game developers alike. The early results are fabulous and we are glad to be backed by veterans who prioritized that over everything else.
